The Prize

Statutes

  1. The Federal President awards the Deutsche Zukunftspreis

    • The Federal President's Award for Technology and Innovation.
    • As a rule the prize is awarded annually.
  2. The Deutsche Zukunftspreis

    • is awarded in a national benchmarking to outstanding innovations in the areas of technology, engineering and the natural sciences, as well as software and algorithm-based innovations,
    • makes the public aware of the scientific and technical potential for innovation in Germany,
    • promotes an environment that embraces technological innovation and
    • encourages an understanding of the connection between technical innovation, social transformation and the creation of jobs.
  3. The Deutsche Zukunftspreis honors achievements in the areas of technology, engineering and the natural sciences as well as software and algorithm-based innovations,

    • that expands the international state of research and state-of-the-art,
    • the applicability of which must be assured,
    • that in all likelihood is marketable, can generate value and create jobs,
    • that is not more than 5 years old, if possible.
  4. Recipients may be individuals or groups of people.

  5. A jury shall select the prize recipient on the recommendation of the following institutions:

    • Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen
    • Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung
    • Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V.
    • Bundesverband Informationswirtschaft, Telekommunikation und neue Medien e.V.
    • Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina
    • Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft
    • Deutscher Industrie- und Handelskammertag
    • Deutsches Patent- und Markenamt
    • Deutscher Verband Technisch-Wissenschaftlicher Vereine
    • Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft
    • Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft Deutscher Forschungszentren e.V.
    • Hochschulrektorenkonferenz
    • Max-Planck-Gesellschaft
    • Wissenschaftsgemeinschaft Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz

  6. It is not possible to apply for the prize.

  7. The jury is appointed by the Federal President for a period of five years on the recommendation of the Board of Trustees. The term of service of any member may be extended once. The maximum age of jury members is 70 years. Members of the jury must be independent experts, both academics and practitioners. The number of jury members should not exceed ten.

  8. The Board of Trustees shall be nominated by the Federal President. It shall be composed of:

    • The Federal Minister of Education and Research

    The representatives of companies and sponsors who have contributed towards financing the prize with a minimum of 50,000 Euros/year for five years.
    The President for the Endowment Association for German Sciences shall preside as chairman; his substitute shall be the Chief of the Office of the Federal President.

  9. The Board of Trustees shall convene once a year at the invitation of the Federal President in his office.

    The Board of Trustees

    • shall recommend those members of the jury to the Federal President for nomination,
    • and shall determine the final criteria for the selective process,
    • shall accompany the future development of the prize in consideration of its affect on the public.
  10. The Federal President shall award the prize in a public ceremony.


  11. The Deutsche Zukunftspreis - The Federal President's Prize for Technology and Innovation - is awarded with prize money in the amount of 250,000 Euros. The funds required for financing the prize, the selection of the recipients and for the public awards ceremony are provided by sponsoring companies and other sponsors. Over the years the aim is to establish an endowment fund, the proceeds of which should cover the costs for the selection process and the awards ceremony.

  12. In agreement with the Federal President, the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft procures the necessary funding and financial resources, supports the bodies, organizes the selection process and the award ceremony.
